There are cases, though, when you want your client to receive a predictable, consistent IP address. The most common scenario is when you run a server on your client PC. Suppose you run a Web site on a PC at home, and you need access to this server from elsewhere — work, school, your laptop in the park. This is why a higher power invented Port Forwarding.
Your router will allow you to forward traffic destined for a specified port to a specific machine. In its simplest form, you can configure your router to forward incoming traffic destined for port 80 — the default port number for Web traffic — to the IP address of the PC running your Web server.
It could change, and your port forwarding would become unreliable. However, this may limit your ability to easily connect that machine to other networks — a more likely problem for laptops. If your ISP changes name servers on occasion, this could also break your manual network configuration. Combining the best of both worlds, a static DHCP address allows your clients to continue receiving their network parameters automatically, yet you know exactly which IP address will be assigned.
In the Status window, click Support , and in that window, click Details. Click the Ethernet tab. Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment. By Aaron Weiss August 02, Open source router firmware does things the factory-installed stuff never offers.
This relies on the special "known" tag which is set when a host is matched. On linux! This may prove useful for upgrading firmwares for embedded devices. Due to space constraints this feature is currently not supported. Use the optware package instead and disable the built-in dnsmasq service.
Many VoIP phones have a clock and some will display the current date and time synced from an NTP server on your network. Some wall clocks are wireless and will also sync to an NTP server. The offset is the number of seconds from GMT.
Note that not all phones process the offset correctly. Polycom phones DO process the offset correctly. For example Valcom institutional wall clocks use the new method. For example if your NTP server is The dnsmasq DHCPv6 server provides the same set of features as the DHCPv4 server, and in addition, it includes router advertisements and a neat feature which allows nameing for clients which use DHCPv4 and stateless autoconfiguration only for IPv6 configuration.
It's possible to verify that the options you set in the web interface match those being passed to DNSMasq. The options should match the command-line format specified in the DNSMasq man page. If the line is missing, DNSMasq isn't running and may have been unable to start due to one of its options being set incorrectly.
To find out why DNSmasq is failing; you can find out what the error return code is by issuing DNSmasq from the command line:. It could be something as simple as having the same command twice in the config file, to have DNSmasq fail. I found some web pages suggesting running various "netsh" commands on the Vista command line to disable changing "TCP window size" or something like that, but the commands don't appear to have affected the issue.
Any help is appreciated. Posted: Sun Jul 20, Post subject:. On the setup page make sure the lan settings for default gateway and dns are 0. If you have had a static setup on the wan and use dhcp on the lan you will see the static dns settings.. Posted: Mon Jul 21, Post subject: Won't affect the wire?
I don't think this is ideal in the long run, but I had to do it for an XP laptop until I get upgraded drivers for its wireless card anyhow. Posted: Mon Nov 17, Post subject:. Was there ever a concrete resolution for this short of not using WPA2? Make the connection, but no IP, unless it's static. Latest driver. I'm on Broadcom, but it looks like this one is an equal opportunity offender. Didn't see the issue with two Dell wireless NICs.
