From day 1 it always has been difficult and physically painful to start. Kick back is extreme, and occurs on most pulls. Yesterday kick back snapped the rope. Marine 89 octane no alcohol. The extreme kickback is a little bit unusual. These engines have no compression release.
The timing is unadjustable and probably is not the sole cause of the kickback problem anyway. I think if the spark timing was altered, the kick back would be even worse. It must have the proper ignition coil in it for it to start and run. A restricted exhaust system may be a contributor here too. I have experienced kickback on these small engines before, but not to the degree you are dealing with.
I wonder if there may be a restriction somewhere. First off Just to make sure To clean the muffler, throw it on a grill next to the hamburgers. There may be a clogged spark arrestor screen in the muffler not allowing exhaust out properly and causing kickback at start up Secondly, and this may surprise you.
The flywheel on the crank of these has a cast-in key that keeps the timing stable. It lines up with a slot in the crankshaft. When a 4 stroke motor does what yours is doing, a sheared flywheel key is suspect. I have seen the aluminum cast in key on these 2 stroke flywheels wear down Disassembly will be required to check this however.

Question: Leaking Trimmer I just replaced the fuel lines on my ryobi r trimmer due to a craked line and it ran for about 2 min and then quit. It will start if I press the primmer button but will only run for about 10 seconds. Also guel drips out of the carb when it is not running. Any ideas would be very helpful. With cracked fuel lines, debris can get into the fine mesh screen in the fuel pump side of the carburetor, causing conditions similar to yours.
Remove the pump cover and clean the filter screen with carb cleaner spray. Other than that, it may be time to install a gasket and diaphragm kit for the carb. Ethanol fuel hardens all the parts in the carb; the little fuel pump especially. When it hardens, it no longer works. Full rebuilt kits are available also. They take a bit longer to do.
